This figure represents a record-breaking number of enrollments into the Affordable Care Act’s coverage.

Over 16.3 million people across the United States purchased health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in the most recent open enrollment period, for a record number of enrollees since the program initially launched a decade ago.

The enrollments took place between November 1, 2022, and January 15, 2023.

The 16.3 million people who purchased their health insurance through the ACA represents an increase of about 2 million people over the number of enrollees from the year before. The White House’s data showed that about 3.6 million people – approximately 22 percent of those who registered in the open enrollment period – were new to the marketplace, also known as an exchange.

“Unprecedented investments lead to unprecedented results,” said Xavier Becerra, US Health and Human Services Secretary.

“The Biden-Harris Administration has made lowering health care costs and expanding access to health insurance a top priority — and these record-breaking numbers show we are delivering results for the American people,” explained Becerra. “We will keep doing everything we can to ensure more people have the peace of mind that comes with high-quality, affordable health care.”

92 percent of the ACA health insurance enrollees had at least three insurer options from which to choose.

The White House issued a media release stating that over 9 out of every 10 consumers were able to choose plans from three or more insurers when they were shopping for their 2023 coverage. Moreover, four out of every five returning enrollees found coverage that cost $10 or less after their tax credits were taken into account.

“On the tenth anniversary of the ACA Marketplaces, the numbers speak for themselves: more people signed up for plans this year than ever before, and the uninsured rate is at an all-time low,” said Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure in a recent statement.

During the 2022 enrollment period, about 14.5 million people enrolled in ACA health insurance plans. Since 2020, the number of people who enrolled in plans through the HealthCare.gov exchange website increased by 5 million after having fallen to around 11.5 million.
