Legislators fight back against auto insurance changes in Michigan

New legislation in Michigan seeking to change the state’s auto insurance laws has found opposition with some of the state’s lawmakers. Michigan Democrats have taken issue with the pending legislation, claiming that it is unfair for some motorists that currently have trouble paying for the insurance coverage they have. Louisiana drivers pay second highest premiums for car insurance now behind Michigan

According to an Insure.com Quadrant Information Services study, Michigan has now taken the place held by Louisiana last year, when it had the most expensive auto insurance premiums in the country.  The average rate paid by Michigan drivers for their auto insurance is $2,541, while Louisiana’s average rate is $2,453 per year.  The study data was used to determine the cheapest and most expensive insurance rates among the states. NICB reveals top cities and states known for suspicious insurance claims

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has released a report that has indicated that almost half of all of the suspicious property/casualty insurance claims made to insurance companies come from California, New York, Texas, Florida, and Michigan. In fact, those five states alone make up 49 percent of the total number of “questionable claims” in the entire country, according to the NICB’s calculations, as presented in the report. Michigan insurance scam may have left many paying for phony coverage

Michigan insurance regulators are reporting that hundreds of drivers in Detroit may be victims of a scam. Nearly 1,000 fraudulent insurance policies were issued from a company based in Texas. State regulators have ordered Michigan-based Don Diamond and Ethos insurance to stop fraudulent deals as they continue investigating the situation. The policies in question seem to have originated from either Diamond or Ethos. Diamond argues that the fake policies come from malicious subcontractors in Detroit. Why are Michigan car insurance rates highest on average?

According to a new national survey conducted by Insure.com, Michigan is home to the highest average car insurance premiums in the U.S., followed closely by Louisiana and Oklahoma. Insure.com compiled data from six of the largest auto insurance providers in the nation and more than 2,400 vehicles from across 10 zip codes in each state. The company conducts this survey annually and lists the results for all to see on their website.
