Earlier this year, the Progressive insurance company began offering Florida residents a pay-as-you-drive insurance program. Dubbed Snapshot, the program gives consumers lower rates of approximately 30% on average, based on their driving behavior. The insurer analyses driving habits with the help of a small device that is installed in vehicles. According to the insurer, the device has tracked over two billion miles, and is now ready to be used throughout the nation.
Drivers that signed up are reporting a savings on average of $150 annually. Progressive notes that the possible 30% discount is the biggest they have ever offered policyholders.
“I’m issuing a challenge to drivers across the country,” says president and CEO Glenn Renwick. “Get a quote from Progressive and send us a ‘snapshot’ of your driving habits, and see what happens.” Renwick says that the worst that could happen is that premiums remain the same.
The Snapshot program provides drivers with the opportunity to pay for coverage rated on how much they drive. Customers that drive safely and less frequently will be eligible for discounts. The plan is designed to identify good drivers rather than poor ones. Those with unsafe habits will not be liable for rate increases beyond what they would normally incur.
Progressive began advertising the program on a national level today and says they will be adding support to more states throughout the year. Customers will be able to enter into the program either from the insurer or through independent agents.
