The Narendra Modi government is hoping to implement a universal insurance program for the country.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has announced that his government is now preparing for health care reform across the country in the hopes of creating a “complete transformation” of the current medical sector.
The universal health insurance program will be personally supervised by Prime Minister Modi.
As this health care reform begins, it will represent the largest of its kind that the world has ever seen. The purpose will be to ensure that quality health insurance services will be available to everyone in the country, said an official release. The statement quoted Harsh Vardhan, the health minister of the country, who had given a speech on Saturday to physicians in the United States who are of Indian origin.
Vardhan spoke of President Obama’s health care reform as the “blueprint” for the effort in India.
He stated that “The blueprint of the world’s largest universal health insurance program is in the process of being sharpened under the Prime Minister’s personal gaze. It is partially inspired by US President Barack Obama’s grand insurance-for-all project, which is popularly known as ‘Obamacare’.”
The health minister spoke at the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), which was held in Texas, and also proceeded to read Prime Minister Modi’s written speech. The PM had authorized Vardhan to create a design for a “brand-new policy soon.”
In Modi’s speech, he stated that the goal was to completely overhaul the current health sector in India by way of innovation, research, and the latest technology. It was also revealed by Vardhan that there would be a portal designed which would provide physicians in the United States with the opportunity to gain all of the required permissions that they would need for working in India. This process would take two weeks or less through the new portal.
The minister explained that as a part of the health care reform, he had also instructed the MCI medical education regulator to make certain that if there was a hold up of longer than 15 days through the portal, then permission will be automatically granted to the applicant.
