A group defending the state’s coverage system says it has found instances of insurers breaking the law. A group defending the Michigan auto insurance system said it has found cases in which insurers have illegally targeted women and widows for higher premiums. If this is true, those insurers are in direct violation of state laws prohibiting the use of gender and marital status for rate calculations. Auto insurance coverage is expected to become less expensive in Michigan due to new measure Changes being made to Michigan’s auto insurance laws could mean lower premiums for consumers and lower costs for insurers. Police in Michigan can now run the plates of a vehicle to determine whether or not it is insured. Drivers on the streets of Michigan now have more incentive to ensure that they obtain the legally required auto insurance for their vehicles, as police have just been armed with a new and much easier way to identify uninsured motorists.
