Nancy G. Atkins has been the deputy commissioner and has now been appointed to the top spot.

The new Kentucky Insurance Commissioner has now been named as former Deputy Commissioner Nancy G. Atkins was appointed to the position.

Atkins is now heading the state’s Insurance Department, where she already has extensive experience.

The latest Kentucky Insurance Commissioner is no new entry to the industry or the types of duties she has taken on as her own. Atkins has been working within the insurance industry for 33 years. She has worked as an insurance agent as well as an employee benefit manager. That said, before joining the Kentucky Department of Insurance, Atkins had been the Bluegrass Family Health Inc. director of sales and marketing.

There, Atkins was responsible for the management of a team of account representatives and insurance agents. Throughout that time, she worked with the Department of Insurance to make certain her choices aligned with the state regulations.

After having served as the deputy to the position, she has now been named Kentucky Insurance Commissioner.

She is a licensed nurse and had worked as a hospital administrative professional, giving her further depth of understanding of health care within the state.

The appointment to deputy insurance commissioner occurred in February 2017. “Nancy is a consummate professional, and her experiences with both the clinical and the administrative components of insurance provide her with a unique perspective that will be invaluable as the leader of DOI,” said David Dickerson, Public Protection Cabinet Secretary, upon Atkins’s official appointment to the head of the department.

The state commissioner released a statement from the Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet, expressing that she feels “honored to lead the department during this critical time for Kentucky’s insurance market.”

Nancy G. Atkins is replacing Patrick O’Connor as the Kentucky Insurance Commissioner when he chose to step down and return to the private sector as of April 30, 2017.
