The actress recently went public with her breast cancer battle and is now fighting for low-cost coverage.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has opened up about her own recent medical journey and is now speaking out in favor of affordable health care. In September 2017, the actress shared her battle with breast cancer. She used Instagram to document several of her treatment sessions, so the world could see a bit of what is involved in the fight.

Louis-Dreyfus is now using that journey as a jumping off point in the battle for affordable coverage.

The 57-year-old actress was very open about her experience as she received her breast cancer treatment. Now, having realized how different that process would have been if she had not had the privilege of being able to afford the substantial costs of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Now, she wants to make sure affordable health care is available for all Americans.

“I think it’s an important conversation to have about health and health care. I very much considered the notion that as someone battling this disease, the idea that I might not have health insurance, which I do thanks to my great union, is completely terrifying,” said Louis-Dreyfus. “Health care should be for all. I believed that before and now I really know it,” said a News Herald report.

She has returned to filming on Veep but is still using this time to speak on behalf of affordable health care.

Louis-Dreyfus had postponed the filming of Veep in order to be able to receive her cancer treatments. That said, she has returned to the show with a better understanding of the difference affordable health insurance plan makes. She explained that after having told the cast and crew what she was going through, it seemed much easier and more natural to also share the experience with the world over social media.

When the actress appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she said that: “First and foremost, we had stalled ‘Veep’ production because of my situation. A lot of people worked for me, so I knew I really couldn’t keep it private because I had to tell everybody what was going on.” She also added that: “I got a lot of positive feedback. I think people liked that I had a sense of humour about it.”

She understands that it wouldn’t have been nearly as easy if she hadn’t had such good fortune and has taken this opportunity to speak out for affordable health care for all Americans.
