Insurers across the country are making an attempt to assist people in avoiding some of the most common events leading to insurance claims throughout the 4th of July celebrations by releasing the four leading types of claim.
The U.S. Fire Administration has announced that the leading cause of structure fires and related insurance claims are cooking fires. They recommend that a grill be placed an adequate distance from any structures or trees to ensure that the branches or siding will not ignite. Grease traps should be regularly emptied as they ignite easily. Never leave a grill or fire unattended and keep pets and children away from the flames.
Next most common event leading to insurance claims on the 4th of July is car accidents, due to a higher possibility of drinking and driving within a greater volume of traffic. If you have been drinking, be certain to make alternative arrangements for going home, or stay another night where you are. If you have guests who have been drinking, don’t let them drive after having done so. If you haven’t been drinking but you will be driving, be vigilant on the roads and limit your time driving to decrease your chance of exposure to a collision.
Injuries relating to fireworks are common as those products are dangerous. The latest statistics from the CDC has shown that in one year, an average of 9,200 people are treated for injuries connected to the use of fireworks. Avoid using fireworks near yourself, your family, or your property, and attend a professional display, instead.
Every year on the 4th of July, there are approximately 8,000 boating accidents. Do not drink alcohol and operate a boat as it is just as dangerous as drinking and driving. Always ensure that every passenger has a life jacket easily available on the boat and make sure that children know proper boating safety. Passengers should not be allowed to swim when the boat’s motor is in operation.
