Highmark announces the launch of new low premium and deductible individual health insurance coverage

Health InsuranceHighmark has announced the availability of a new form of individual health insurance plan called the Simply Blue PPO, which is designed to provide policyholders with simple coverage at a low premium, with a predictable structure for copayments and with low deductibles.

According to Highmark’s senior vice president of health services strategy, product and marketing, Steven Nelson, “We listened to our members’ feedback, and we’ve heard them say that they would like a more affordable plan without a large upfront deductible.”

The new plan is medically underwritten and offers policyholders preventive care benefits with full coverage, as well as vision benefits and emergency room coverage, though not maternity coverage.

It uses the Progressive Formulary from Highmark, which is a new form of focused prescription drug plan that is geared toward the use of generic medications, encouraging its customers to try to obtain drugs alternatives with a lower cost while still making sure that they are able to gain access to brand name drugs and a pharmacy program with a high quality.

Simply Blue’s monthly premiums start at $90. Men between the ages of 25 and 29 have a $500 deductible. There are set copayments which are $35 for a visit to a primary care provider, $25 for a basic diagnostic test, and $50 for a visit to a specialist. Beyond the copayment, there is no deductible and coverage is full.

Nelson explained that the plan was created for people who don’t have group coverage, such as those who are just entering retirement and young, active adults.
