GEICO launches Facebook app to connect with consumers

Geico InsuranceWith the nation’s health insurance system soon to become electronic, other insurance industries are attempting to establish their digital presence in the hopes of connecting with consumers. GEICO Insurance has long enjoyed a formidable presence on the Internet, even before the so-called “digital gold rush.” The auto insurer is looking to further its reach, however, and has launched a new application on Facebook titled “GEICO Shortcuts.” The app will help GEICO customers find policies through the social network.

Facebook has been targeted by the insurer due to its dramatic and unabashed growth. The social network is comprised of millions of people worldwide, each connected in some way or another. Social networks have been popular advertising tools in the past, a fact that GEICO is well aware of, and the company hopes to use the network to establish more connectivity with consumers.

The Facebook app will allow policyholders to pay their bill online, print insurance documents, participate in GEICO’s Privileges program, and take part in a number of social games. The app is available on smart phones via Facebook’s own mobile application. GEICO is likely to continue expanding its online presence as more insurers begin to make use of social networks to connect with consumers. Thus far, consumers response to the initiative has been positive, with criticism resting on potential intrusions of privacy, which are common complaints when Facebook is concerned.
