Small business advocates educate California stakeholders about insurance exchanges, the most important component of healthcare reform for small businesses.
Health insurance exchanges, a provision of national healthcare reform intended to give small businesses and individuals access to high-quality insurance at affordable costs, are the most critical component of reform for small businesses. If these exchanges are not implemented properly, small businesses won’t reap the rewards a successful exchange can provide: good insurance at low costs.
Small Business Majority and other experts, including the health policy director of New York’s successful small business insurance exchange, are holding a discussion forum to educate government staff, insurance brokers, healthcare providers and other key stakeholders involved in implementing California’s small business health insurance exchange in order to ensure it’s implemented correctly.
WHEN: 10am-2pm PDT on Friday, Oct. 14, 2011
WHAT: The first of three forums will focus on how to provide excellent insurance at an appealing rate. Shawn Nowicki, director of health policy for HealthPass New York, will be on hand to answer questions about lessons learned from the New York exchange.
WHO: Terry Gardiner, Vice President, Policy and Strategy, Small Business Majority. Shawn Nowicki, Director, Health Policy, HealthPass New York. Micah Weinberg, Senior Policy Advisor, Bay Area Council (moderator)
WHERE: CSAC Conference Center, 1020 11th Street, Second Floor, Sacramento, CA
About the Exchange Forums
California’s small business (SHOP) exchange can significantly benefit small employers and their workers – but all those involved in setting it up must engage in a productive conversation about how best to do so if it’s to be successful. The second discussion on the SHOP exchange is on November 16 and will feature speakers addressing how the exchange can provide valuable services to small businesses. The third forum – held in January, 2012 at a time to be determined – will focus on how the exchange will reach its target audience, both self-employed and small employers. All forums will be held in Sacramento.
