Proposition 33 has now been officially assigned by the office of the Secretary of State.

Consumer advocates, along with California agents and brokers, who have been seeking new opportunities for drivers to be able to shop for better deals, have announced that Proposition 33 has now been assigned to the 2012 Automobile Insurance Discount Act by the Secretary of State’s Office.

This proposition is meant to reward motorists for maintaining their coverage and following the law.

It also gives drivers in the state the opportunity to use a their loyalty discounts and carry them over to other automobile insurance companies. The California law that is currently in place allows consumers to receive a discount for continuing their coverage, but only if they remain with the same insurer. This would reward a driver for maintaining an uninterrupted policy, regardless of who provides it.

Proposition 33 is designed to boost automobile insurance competition and decrease the number of uninsured drivers.

According to the American Agents Alliance executive director, Mike D’Arelli, “Proposition 33 was written to be inclusive. It will save Californians money and help us reach our goal of insuring everyone on the road.” He added that “We encourage everyone to read Proposition 33. It is a good idea.”

If Proposition 33 passes, it will accomplish the following:

• Provide protection for drivers who have been laid off or who have been furloughed with the ability to maintain their loyalty discount, even if they are unable to pay for automobile insurance for up to a year and a half.

• Offer protection to residents of the state who are facing unexpected hardships that make them unable to pay their premiums – for any reason – for up to three months.

• Give military members protection by maintaining their loyalty discount even if their policies are cancelled while they are overseas.

• Protect family finances by allowing children residing with their parents to benefit from the loyalty discounts of their parents.

According to D’Arelli, Proposition 33 makes it possible for Californians to receive an automobile insurance reward simply for complying with the laws of the state.
